New US-Taiwan trade talks start online after negotiator catches COVID-19

Minister without Portfolio John Deng

Highly-anticipated trade talks between the United States and Taiwan will begin online today after Taiwan’s top trade negotiator tested positive for COVID.

Senior negotiator John Deng had been due to meet Deputy US Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi as part of the new US-Taiwan 21st Century Trade Initiative. But after Deng contracted COVID in Mexico, the meeting changed to a virtual format.

According to Taiwan’s representative to the US, Deng is undergoing quarantine in Mexico and has mild symptoms of the disease.

Deng was also scheduled to attend the SelectUSA Investment summit after his meeting with Bianchi. But because of his illness, National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsing will attend the event instead.
